Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology

Join our dedicated team at Musgrove Park Hospital, a renowned center for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism in Somerset. We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Consultant to lead, innovate, and expand our comprehensive specialist services. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a specialty interest in areas such as advanced diabetes technology (hybrid closed loops), weight management, endocrinology, and transition care for young adults.

You'll be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team committed to delivering high-quality patient care while participating in innovative research and shaping the future of integrated healthcare across Somerset.

Main duties of the job

Provide specialist diagnosis, treatment, and care to patients with complex diabetes, endocrinology, and obesity issues.

Lead outpatient and inpatient services, working alongside experienced colleagues and a forward-thinking multidisciplinary team.

Develop and manage specialist clinics in advanced diabetes technology, obesity, or areas of interest.

Contribute to the acute medical on-call rota (1:20), supporting a 51-bed acute medical unit and 29-bed inpatient ward.

Engage in teaching, training, and supervising junior doctors, medical students, and allied healthcare professionals.

Participate in and lead clinical research, audits, and service development projects.

Collaborate with regional and national centers, including the National Hospital for Neurosurgery in London and the neuroendocrine tumor service in Bristol.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Entry on Specialist Register with CCT in Endocrinology and Diabetes within 6 months of date of interview for this post.
  • CCT in G(I)M
  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent
  • Experience in formal research fellowship leading to a higher degree (MD/PhD)
Experience
  • Considerable experience in diabetes and endocrinology in a UK setting
  • Experience in medical and surgical treatment of obesity.
Additional Criteria
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical diagnosis and care of patients
  • Evidence of participation in clinic audit
  • Evidence of ability to mentor staff, both medical and nursing
  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligibly in written and spoken English
  • Ability to take a lead in developing/managing a clinical area
  • Ability to practice evidence-based medicine
