Consultant in Developmental Paediatrics & DMO for SEND

This is an exciting opportunity for a consultant to join a well-established neurodevelopmental and neurodisability team at St George's University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and meet rising demand in most of our specialist teams within Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics and the Looked After Children (LAC) Services. The successful candidate will work across and deliver care for the LAC, Developmental Paediatrics, ADHD and ASD sub-specialties. This post includes the designated role (DMO) for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Main duties of the job

This post is part of the NDND (Neuro-Developmental & Neuro-Disability) care group within the Children's Directorate. Within the NDND care group the following services are included: Developmental Paediatrics, Educational Paediatrics, ASD, ADHD, Looked after Children, Neurodisability and District Epilepsy. There are 8 consultants and associated staff. The team is integrated with the other paediatric services in St George's hospital, which is unique and provides excellent links with other specialties.

Job responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities of this post:

Provide clinics for the assessment and management of children with suspected neurodevelopmental delay or disorders including developmental clinics, ADHD, ASD and SEND clinics.

Managerial Responsibilities

Management responsibilities as applicable to the post.

CPD, Audit & Clinical Governance

Participate in CPD activity. Support ongoing audit within the care group and childrens directorate. Observe the clinical governance requirements of the post.

DMO Role

Provide strategic leadership as DMO, including triaging incoming referrals and playing an active role in delivering and improving the service for children with special educational needs. Liaison with DCO. Key link for DCO into Paediatric services at St Georges to include escalation of clinical queries. Work with Paediatric colleagues to support understanding of developments across Local Area in terms of SEND including understanding of the wider Local Offer (this has particular relevance in terms of quality of advice). Work with DCO on quality assurance processes for medical advice as part of Education, Health and Care needs assessment and embed learning within the Paediatric services. This will include at least quarterly audits. Attend Wandsworth SEND partnership board (quarterly) and participate in bimonthly SWL DCO DMO network (bi monthly). Review effectiveness of pathways with St Georges for CYP with SEND.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in relevant Paediatric specialty: Community Child Health, Neurodisability, Child Mental Health or General Paediatrics (candidates within 6 months of CCT are eligible to apply)
  • Full registration and licence to practise with General Medical Council or eligible if currently working overseas
  • MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Level 3 Child Safeguarding training
  • Level 4 Child Safeguarding training
  • Level 4 LAC competences
  • Other LAC specific training
Experience
  • Experience in Community Paediatrics, Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics and Neurodevelopmental assessment
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of complex patients
  • Audit: evidence of understanding of audit principles and having taken a lead role in completing at least 2 audit projects in clinical areas relevant to this application
  • Experience in Looked After Children (LAC) Medical services appropriate to meet the responsibilities of the Named Doctor role described above
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals, presentations at national or international level
Skills

  • Ability to conduct a comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessment of children with suspected developmental problems with understanding of relevant psychosocial factors
  • Ability to compile a comprehensive report within defined timescales
  • Ability to liaise effectively with other professionals and agencies to ensure appropriate treatment and support
  • Ability to review a child and write a SEND/EHCP report
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multiagency team
  • Ability to diagnose and manage a child with ASD and/or ADHD
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of recognised tools for the assessment of developmental disorders e.g. Griffiths Mental Developmental Scales, SOGS etc.
  • Understand multiagency working in the context of safeguarding
  • Familiarity with recognised tools for the assessment of suspected ADHD and ASD
