Job description
Overview

The post holder will provide clinical dermatology services in inpatient and outpatient settings within the Dermatology Department, including routine and urgent clinics, with opportunities for specialist clinics. The role includes leadership, teaching, governance, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality patient care.

Outpatient work
  • Seeing new patients, patients on follow up and the delivery of minor operational procedures.
  • Working with an extensive skilled Nursing team.
  • Deliver general Dermatology clinics and skin cancer clinics.
  • Attend the weekly Skin MDT.
Inpatient
  • The post holder will be expected to take significant responsibility for supervision and management of inpatient referrals.
  • Undertake all medical duties, assessing ill patients, managing medical problems and liaising with relatives and other medical departments.
Main duties of the job
  • Outpatient clinics consisting of new patients and follow-up patients.
  • Biologics clinics, Botox biologics, surgery, MDT. Supporting our trained nurses with Nurse led activity.
  • Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty.
  • Undertaking work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.
  • Clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and the Trust service plans.
  • Maintaining confidence in business plans and development strategies for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust.
  • Job Plan finalised on application.

The Department and Service Context

The Dermatology department is part of the Division of Integrated Medicine, providing unscheduled and scheduled services through integrated patient pathways. It has strong links with local GPs, the CCG and other South Yorkshire Dermatology Teams. The department sees approximately 6000 new patients per year and performs 500-day case procedures. There are opportunities for specialist interest clinics and teaching and training of medical staff and students from Sheffield University. The service emphasises patient safety, good outcomes, excellent patient experience and efficient use of resources.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Full GMC registration and licence to practise; eligible to be included on the Specialist Register (CCT expected within 6 months of interview).
  • MRCP or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • High level of clinical experience and competence in General Dermatology, skin cancer diagnosis, management and surgery.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinions and to work across a broad range of Dermatology topics.

Desirable

  • Higher degree or formal qualification in teaching/education; management training; research experience or publications.
Education, Teaching and Research
  • Experience of clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors, non-medical staff and students (essential).
  • Critical appraisal skills; involvement in audit and implementation of outcomes (essential).
  • Willingness to participate in a multidisciplinary team and commitment to CPD and governance.
Other requirements
  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check in line with government requirements.
  • UK registration and, if applicable, sponsorship considerations.
Role and Commitments
  • Teaching, supervision and mentorship of trainees; potential for SPA time for specialty/ Foundation training coordination and education leadership.
  • Participation in clinical governance activities, audits, guideline writing/updating and related projects.
  • Possible evening or weekend clinical activity in the future; dedicated office space and support available.
