Job description

Job summary

Applications are invited for a number of Consultant Intensivist posts within Adult Critical Care at St George's University Hospitals Foundation Trust, London.

We are looking for excellent individuals to join the Critical Care team of this progressive London teaching hospital.

Post holders will:

Provide clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary team delivering Critical Care

Engage in associated Service Development, Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement work

Contribute to the education and supervision of students and trainees

Support Directorate-wide Research activities

Contribute to the non-clinical management of the base unit

It is envisaged that the post holder will carry out the majority of their duties as a Consultant Intensivist on CTICU, GICU or NICU. There are opportunities for some DCC time to be allocated to contribute to the Critical Care Outreach Service, follow-up clinic and/or to pursue a secondary clinical speciality. We currently have Consultants who split their time across Anaesthesia, Medical Specialties, St George's Medical School and wider Trust/NHS managerial roles. We would encourage interested applicants to get in touch for an informal discussion about how an alternative secondary specialty interest could be accommodated.

Main duties of the job

Please see the Job Summary section attached for a description of the expected duties of the post-holder. The job plan will be fully annualised. Current job planning guidance at St George's expects consultants to work a minimum of 42 clinical weeks per year. There is flexibility in the number of PA commitments that existing consultants offer to the trust and applicants wishing to work less than 10 PAs are encouraged to apply.

The post holder will be required to participate in the CTICU/ GICU / NICU consultant on-call rota. There are 2 rotas on each unit that run in parallel. The first, so-called '1st on' rota is a seven-day duty period running Monday to Monday, including Saturday and Sunday nights. The '2nd on' rota provides for second consultant weekday cover and includes that weekday night.

The post holder will have the option of spending a portion of Direct Clinical Care with the Outreach service, which provides 7-day a week 07:45 to 17:45 consultant cover. There is also the opportunity to be involved with the SW London Adult Critical Care Transfer Service and the ICU Survivorship Service.
