Job description

Applications are welcomed for a highly motivated Consultant in Anaesthetics based at Furness General Hospital.

The hospital is part of a trust with 5 site bases, with intensive care departments on 2 of its larger sites and theatres on 3 of the 5 sites. You will predominantly be based at Furness General Hospital, covering general anaesthetic services. You will join a department of 8 Consultants, with several Specialists, Specialty Doctors, and ACCPs. Depending on your clinical skills, the successful candidate could have the opportunity to work in main theatres covering maternity, gynaecology, orthopaedics, trauma, ophthalmology, and ENT, while also attending Westmorland General Hospital, which focuses primarily on elective surgery.

Furness General Hospital is a friendly district hospital located in South Cumbria, close to the Lake District. Westmorland General Hospital is situated on the outskirts of Kendal, a popular Lakeland town. All hospitals are in areas of outstanding natural beauty, offering superb outdoor and recreational activities near the Lake District. Good transport links provide easy access to many northern cities with a variety of shops, restaurants, museums, and galleries.

  1. You will participate in a 1:8 Consultant of the week model, including prospective cover for Obstetrics and emergency theatres.
  2. You will join a team of 8 Consultants supporting all general hospital services, including a busy Accident and Emergency department, and theatres covering maternity, gynaecology, orthopaedics, trauma, ophthalmology, and ENT.
  3. On-call shifts provide non-residential cover of Obstetrics and emergency theatres, supervising a dedicated resident anaesthetist.
  4. Lead assessments of the deteriorating patient for emergency admission to the Intensive Care Unit.
  5. Lead the team in managing pre- and post-operative theatre admissions.
  6. Participate in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement.
  7. Demonstrate evidence-based practice where appropriate.
  8. Undertake and participate in the appraisal process and job planning.
  9. Satisfy the criteria for revalidation.
  10. Contribute to service development in areas of special interest and expertise.
  11. Actively participate in continuing medical education.
  12. Undertake personal appraisal and job planning as part of revalidation.
  13. Maintain all mandatory training requirements.
