Job Description:

We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Anaesthetist. This is a substantive consultant post and applicants will be expected to have interest and suitable experience within colorectal surgery, pre-operative assessment of high-risk patients, and general duties. The post will include sessions in high-risk anaesthetic assessment clinics. The appointee will be expected to develop perioperative medicine in the trust. The department operates cardiopulmonary exercise testing to risk stratify patients over the last 10 years.

The new appointee will share the case-load, facilities, and trainee grade support with the existing consultants. In conjunction with the existing consultants, the appointee will lead developments in anaesthetic services/perioperative medicine within the Trust.

This substantive post will be based at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow and will be responsible for providing high-quality, responsive Anaesthetic service/Perioperative care to The Princess Alexandra Hospital, assuming responsibility for the patients within the catchment area in cooperation with Consultant colleagues in Anaesthetics and other clinical departments. The post requires supporting the acute pain relief service in the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to:

  • Maintain and promote multi-disciplinary teamwork within the specialty and those associated with critical care services.
  • Participate in formal teaching, practical training, supervision of junior staff, and assume responsibility for professional supervision and management of non-consultant grade medical staff.
  • Focus on the professional development, both clinical and personal, of trainees.
  • Engage in risk management, governance activities, and other activities in the directorate.
  • Participate in continuing medical education activities following the Royal College of Anaesthetists' guidelines.
  • Participate in the consultant anaesthetists on-call rota, including cross-cover for annual and study leave.
  • Take continuing responsibility for patient care, including administrative duties.
  • Engage promptly with departmental and trust communications, e.g., responding to emails.
  • Provide leadership to ensure proper functioning of services in charge, in line with Trust policies.
  • Develop own specialty interests, including participation in audit and research.
  • Manage junior medical staff responsibly.

Education and qualifications (Essential)

  • CCT (or equivalent) with entry on the Specialist Register for Anaesthesia or within six months of anticipated CCT date
  • MSc/Diploma/PG certification in Perioperative Medicine or equivalent

Clinical Skills and Training (Essential)

  • Advanced training in perioperative medicine or equivalent
  • Higher training in general, urological, gynaecological, obstetric, orthopaedic, regional, and paediatric anaesthesia
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS)
  • Experience in cardiopulmonary exercise testing, regional anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, ATLS/APLS, and relevant medical experience outside anaesthesia
  • Recognition as a clinical supervisor by GMC standards
  • Experience in teaching, training, audit, and research; presentations/publications
