Overview

Consultant in Anaesthesia – ST JOHNS HOSPITAL. Reference - 229113

Requirements
  • Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
Details

Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full time (40 hours per week) post based in St Johns Hospital. This is a full-time post created through retirement. It is available by mutual agreement and will be based at St Johns Hospital, with the possibility of working across NHS Lothian. Opportunities exist to develop a sub speciality interest in Intensive Care.

Responsibilities

The Consultant will be responsible for the continued care of patients in their charge, and for the proper functioning of the department. The post will have 10.0 Programmed Activities (PA): 9 PA of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1 SPA (Supporting Professional Activity); it may be possible to re-organise PA to accommodate specialist interests. 1 EPA may be available.

  • DCC
  • 1 PA is allocated to cover ‘conventional’ on call, on a 1:16 basis, attracting 3% availability supplement
  • 1.0 PA is allocated to represent resident emergency care, on a 1:10 basis weekend dayshifts at 4/3 remuneration – 5 episodes per annum
  • The remainder of DCC sessions will be directed towards Elective Theatre activity

In the future, it is possible that the successful applicant will be required to work resident emergency care night shifts (20:00 – 08:30) at 4/3 remuneration. If enacted, these episodes would be no more frequent than 1 per week. Adjustments to the job plan would be made accordingly. There is also a possibility that Saturday morning elective surgical activity will be established. If this occurs, a pan departmental solution will be sought, and adjustments made to job plans.
