We are offering the opportunity of a part clinical and part research post with the Institute of Psychiatry, specifically looking into areas of improving health for women in prison. This includes reviewing data on short sentences, risks to women, family life, and long-term health, and identifying research areas to influence policy and expand sentencing options.

Main duties of the job

To provide clinical leadership to ensure high-quality patient care to residents.

To develop specialist interests aligned with Trust and local service development plans.

Teaching and training of specialist nurses, other nurses, and prison staff where appropriate.

To contribute to the development of Health and Justice services within the Trust through clinical audit and related activities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We seek an enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist/Forensic Consultant to join our Health & Justice Services at HMP Bronzefield, the largest female prison in Europe. This is a rewarding leadership role to develop mental health care in a complex, supportive environment, making a real difference to women in custody.

  • Forensic experience is not essential: we welcome applications from psychiatrists with general adult, community, liaison, or forensic backgrounds eager to bring their skills into a secure environment.
  • A strong commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is central, ensuring trauma-informed, gender-responsive, and culturally competent care.
  • Research and innovation opportunities: in quality improvement, digital transformation, or AI in healthcare, with time allocated for these interests.

Qualifications
  • Relevant professional qualification or evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
  • Approved clinician status OR achievable within 3 months
  • Approved under S12 OR achievable within 3 months
  • Management and leadership qualification
  • Higher degree (MSc, LLM, MD, or PhD)
  • CCT in forensic psychiatry or equivalent forensic experience or qualification
Previous experience
  • Proven track record of service quality improvement
  • Experience in job planning
  • Experience resolving conflicts and managing complex performance issues
Clinical skills, knowledge, and experience
  • Excellent clinical skills with bio-psycho-social perspective and broad medical knowledge
  • Strong knowledge in the specialty
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written

  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA
