Job description

The postholder’s duties will be at the Colchester Hospital.

Applications are invited for enthusiastic, motivated, and committed individuals to join our friendly and dynamic team within the Emergency Assessment Unit at Colchester Hospital. Our unit has been at the forefront in improving the safety and quality of patient care within the Trust, and is looking to massively expand our capacity in providing same-day emergency and short-stay care.

The Trust is offering 0.5 PA on top of a worked 11 PA job plan, with the option of additional PAs depending on the candidate’s situation, and will be reduced appropriately for someone wishing to work 10 PAs. A further specialist interest will also be welcomed, and the sessional allocation considered on a case-by-case basis.

Clinical

The key duties and responsibilities of the post will be:

  • Clinical and administrative responsibility for the proper functioning of the Emergency Assessment Unit
  • Organising medical admissions through the Emergency Assessment Unit, assigning patients for continuing inpatient care, short-stay beds on the Unit, or discharging from the EAU directly
  • Developing joint protocols for the management of emergency medical admissions with the nursing team and clinical colleagues
  • Developing standards, procedures, and robust systems on EAU to ensure safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care from the point of entry to EAU to admission or discharge
  • Agreeing and ensuring clear processes for handover and specialty triage from EAU
  • Supervision of junior medical staff in the Unit, who will have opportunities to learn on a one-to-one basis during ward rounds and on an ad hoc basis throughout the day
  • Participating in educational programs for junior medical staff, including formal teaching sessions and clinical audits relevant to the needs of the Assessment Unit
  • Teaching and training staff in other medical disciplines, nursing, and support staff as appropriate
  • Issuing advice to GPs on the suitability of patients for hospital admission

All consultants in the department have a continuing and individual responsibility for patient care and a general responsibility to provide effective service to meet the needs of the local population within available resources.

The post-holder will:

  • Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standards of care
  • Collaborate with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
  • Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatient clinics, and A&E
  • Promote close working links with tertiary centres, community services, and primary care
  • Support and lead junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues, and other team members
