Job description

Consultant in Acute Medicine: Up to 10 PA’s

We are excited to invite a skilled Acute Medicine Consultant to join our team at Torbay Hospital. This role offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality patient care within a collaborative and dynamic environment, providing both professional fulfillment and a great quality of life.

Join a dedicated team committed to improving and enjoying their work, with a focus on patient safety, dignity, and care. You will be responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and managing patients with acute medical conditions, ensuring they receive exceptional care from admission to discharge. Collaboration with consultants, resident doctors, and multidisciplinary teams is essential to ensure smooth patient pathways.

The Acute Medicine department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is proactive in service development, quality improvement, education, and training. In December 2022, we opened a new Acute Medical Unit (AMU) with 36 assessment spaces across levels 2 and 3, including a Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility. We also oversee additional capacity in the 24-bed Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU4).

The team manages patient care across these areas and provides an Acute Medicine in-reach service in the Emergency Department during daytime hours.

We seek an individual committed to:

  1. Providing the highest quality care to patients, prioritizing safety and dignity.
  2. Demonstrating confident and authentic leadership.
  3. Offering in-depth teaching and supervision to under/postgraduates, resident, and specialty doctors.
  4. Engaging actively in departmental governance and quality improvement.
  5. Collaborating effectively with operational, clinical, and support teams.
  6. Participating constructively in audit and quality assurance processes.

The department benefits from experienced leadership and maintains strong relationships with Trust senior leadership. It is known for being nurturing and supportive, fostering a culture of safety and professionalism among multidisciplinary teams including nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and discharge coordinators.
