Job summary

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic Acute Medicine Consultant to join our expanding team at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds. You will work across AMU, SDEC, and ED in-reach, delivering a consultant-led service to patients with urgent and acute medical needs.

The post requires MRCP (or equivalent) and being on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT. The role includes a 1:10 out-of-hours rota and opportunities for development within a large teaching

Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and committed individual to join our dynamic and expanding team of Acute Medicine consultants in Leeds. Our growing service aims to deliver a high-quality, consultant-led model of care that meets the needs of our patients.

We provide care across two Acute Medical Units (61 beds) and a co-located 4-bedded High Observation Area. As a large teaching hospital with tertiary services, separate takes operate for some specialties, including elderly medicine. Acute Medicine manages approximately 30 admissions per day.

Our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit is a purpose-built facility, co-located with the Emergency Department and opened in 2023. It delivers a 7‑day service, seeing around 500 patients per week, alongside a well‑established ambulatory VTE pathway.

Applicants should have broad experience in Acute and General Medicine, excellent team‑working skills, and a commitment to multidisciplinary working. We are supported by a growing team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners, alongside nursing and pharmacy colleagues.

Candidates must hold MRCP (or equivalent) and be on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview (for UK trainees). All other applicants must be on the Specialist Register.

If shortlisted, candidates will be asked to deliver a 10-minute presentation on: “How would you improve the quality of the Acute Medicine service at Leeds?”

This post supports the continued development of a consultant-led service, with daily consultant review for all inpatients, alongside dedicated consultant input into SDEC and Emergency Department in‑reach. This model supports early expert decision maker review, admission avoidance, and appropriate patient redirection. The successful applicant will work across all areas of Acute Medicine (AMU, enhanced care, SDEC, and ED in‑reach) and contribute to the out‑of‑hours rota (currently 1:10).

The Trust has a strong track record in teaching and research, and applicants with interests in these areas will be supported to continue this work. While consultant-led, our service places strong emphasis on trainee supervision, which is integral to daily clinical activity.

Opportunities to develop a specialist interest are supported within the job plan, with 1 PA allocated. The department has excellent access to point‑of‑care ultrasound, with established FAMUS trainers within the team.

The Trust is committed to delivering sustainable, consultant‑delivered services, with senior clinical presence across 24/7 working patterns. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to service development and job planning aligned with this model.
