Job summary

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is seeking a Consultant Histopathologist with a focus on breast pathology to join a wide-ranging cellular pathology service serving primary, secondary and tertiary care. The appointee will take a lead role in developing specialist diagnostic techniques and will participate in training, governance and laboratory administration.

The post is fully supported as a Consultant contract with flexible working arrangements considered.

Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
  • On Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR(CP) due within six months of interview.
  • FRCPath or equivalent by examination.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.

  • Lead role in development of specialist diagnostic techniques to meet increasing demands.
  • Assist in training of specialty trainees, scientific and BMS staff.
  • Contribute to clinical governance and administrative duties of running a clinical laboratory.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales with an enhanced starting salary of £140,342

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The appointee would have interest primarily in breast pathology, with further interests in some of: gynaecological pathology, breast pathology, head and neck, endocrine, and pulmonary pathology. The post would suit either a first-time Consultant or an established Consultant Histopathologist wishing to relocate. There is no cervical cytology requirement. Together we will provide and develop a wide-ranging cellular pathology service to primary, secondary and tertiary care colleagues.

The appointee will take a lead role in the development of specialist diagnostic techniques to meet the increasing demands of clinical users and will participate in the training of specialty trainees, scientific and BMS staff. A commitment to contribute to the requirements of clinical governance and share in the administrative duties associated with the running of a clinical laboratory is also expected.

Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise

Experience
  • Broad training and experience in adult pathology
  • Sub-specialist experience in one or more areas
Ability
  • Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
  • Counselling / Communication skills
Audit
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Evidence of engagement with revalidation
Teaching
  • Evidence of teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Organisation of (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) teaching programmes
Personal Qualities
  • Evidence of ability to work both in a team and alone
  • Flexible approach
