The Trust renowned as a world pioneer in the care, treatment and research of cancer. Today, they build on this legacy, translating innovation and research breakthroughs into very real patient benefits.

Many clinical and scientific staff members have contributed to research, education and clinical developments, making the NHS Trust proud to be responsible for having ‘world firsts' and playing a crucial role in the advancement of cancer treatments and care for over 100 years.

The Trust provides both inpatient and outpatient management of a wide variety of benign and malignant haematological disorders as would be typical of a District General Hospital haematology practise. There is a Level 2a Clinical Haematology inpatient, outpatient and day-case service at the Hospital, with patients accessing Level 3 care at a nearby NHS Trust.

Currently, medical staff within the department are provided by a nearby NHS Trust as part of a service level agreement. A number of sessions are provided by consultants and supported by two full time middle-grade doctors and specialist doctor clinics.

The current haematology inpatient and outpatient case mix consists of general haematology, low grade haematological malignancy which includes chronic myeloid and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, low grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, high grade NHL, Hodgkin lymphoma myeloma plus myelodysplasias and a variety of haemostatic and thrombotic problems.

The post holder is expected to have training and expertise in both malignant and non-malignant aspects of haematology. The Consultant in Haematology will undertake both new and follow up outpatient clinics across the week, and will provide continuing responsibility for patients under their care, both by working with other consultant colleagues and by supervising advanced and clinical nurse specialists.

Main Duties include:

- To lead and develop and implement best practice in Haematology
- To support the existing staff at site in the delivery of a high quality service
- To be a core member of the regional Cancer Network Southern Sector Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).
- Membership on Hospital Transfusion Committee
