Due to exciting service developments, the service is looking to recruit a Consultant Geriatrician with interests in Frailty, Movement Disorder, Dementia, Delirium, and Community Geriatrics.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital is a large district general hospital serving a population of 400,000 on the Wirral peninsula. The area has a high proportion of older patients compared to the national average and a significant care home population, resulting in a high number of patients with frailty.

Patients are predominantly admitted to the unit from the Emergency Department (ED), with some from the Urgent Medical Assessment Centre (UMAC). Patients are assessed by a comprehensive Multi-Disciplinary Team on OPAU, focusing on a ‘Home First’ approach.

This post supports our work at the front door, emphasizing a home-first approach. The role's specific remit may evolve as part of our wider departmental review.

Duties include:

1. Collaborating with other Geriatricians to provide comprehensive services.
2. Working with the MDT to assess frail, older patients admitted to WUTH, with a focus on a ‘Home First’ mentality.
3. Providing in-reach into ED when needed to assess frail older patients and support senior decision-making for the Frailty at the Front Door team.
4. Covering the out-of-hours DME on-call rota, which attracts a 3% on-call supplement.
