Job summary

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a Grade Consultant in Geriatric Medicine for the Stoke Mandeville site in Aylesbury. The role is full-time (40 hours per week) with on-call duties and a competitive salary.

The post includes leadership, teaching, and participation in service development for Frailty and older people. The department values innovation and flexible working discussions; the post offers a chance to shape geriatric services and contribute to education of medical students

Qualifications

  • CCT in Geriatric Medicine & GIM (or within six months of achieving CCT) is required.
  • On the specialist register for Geriatric Medicine/GIM is required.
  • UK professional registration is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care in geriatric medicine in acute and community settings.
  • Supervise junior staff and contribute to teaching and training.
  • Participate in audits and governance to improve patient safety and experience.

Job overview

These are exciting times for Medicine for Older People in Bucks. We are working towards strengthening our presence at the front door as well as our foothold in the community, particularly with regards to Frailty.


We are looking for a dynamic person with strong leadership and innovation skills to work in a team to develop Frailty services in Buckinghamshire.


We aim to have a small but robust acute footprint whilst maintaining and strengthening our larger community footprint. For us the front door is the patient’s front door and not the AED.


The on-call rota is 1:13 weekends for ECPOD (Sat-Sun). A lieu day is given after a weekend on call. There are 2 other medical consultants on site as part of the medical take. On Sunday Night 8pm-8am, ECPOD provides cover and advice to the medical take from home


The department is keen to accommodate special interests; we are happy to discuss and consider appropriate changes in the weekly job plan.


The post-holder will take part in the department’s regular teaching to medical students, resident doctors and other health professionals. They will supervise junior staff, as well as other members of the department’s clinical team, and community clinicians.


This is a forward looking post and will evolve. We are expecting the post-holder to take an active part in the development of the role and to help drive geriatric services forward into the next decade.


Main duties of the job

You will work in the community units as well as the acute site (Stoke Mandeville Hospital).


You will be expected to provide prospective cover for annual and study leave.


The department is keen to accommodate special interests, and we will be happy to discuss and consider appropriate changes in the weekly job plan.


As well as fulfilling their clinical responsibilities, the post holder will be expected to play a part in the department’s audit and teaching activities, providing beside and formal teaching to medical students, resident doctors and other health professionals, and supervision of junior staff, as well as other members of the department’s clinical team, and community clinicians.

  • Good clinical knowledge of medicine in geriatrics to unable the consultant to work independently

  • Teaching and training of Junior staff

  • Understanding the principals of clinical governance aspects Patient Safety and experience. A commitment to continuing education and engagement to the appraisal process.

  • Good personal and interpersonal skills. Self-awareness. Ability to judge conflicting demands by planning efficiently and prioritising.

  • Highly developed communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team (s).
