Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in South Wales seeks a Consultant in General Surgery with a Benign Upper GI sub-specialty interest. The post is based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant, with potential to work across CTM sites and a 1:8 on-call rota with a 10-session plan.

English and/or Welsh speakers are welcome. You will provide outpatient and inpatient services, lead a high-quality surgical service, engage in strategic planning, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams

Qualifications

• On the specialist register or within 6 months of CCT/CESR (CT) date.
• Higher degree or Fellowship is desirable.
• JAG accreditation for upper GI endoscopy is essential.
• Experience in management of general/emergency surgery, including benign UGI disease.
• Strong teaching, audit and quality improvement experience.

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in General Surgery with a Benign Upper GI Sub Specialty Interest. The post holder will be based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant, South Wales. The Department of General Surgery is part of the Planned Care Directorate and spans all 3 District General Hospital sites; Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant and Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. The post holder may be required to work across other sites within the Health Board. The on call is 1in 8. Although the Job description may specify a base of work a negotiation for hospital site can be considered. English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply. Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to share with consultant colleagues the responsibility for providing outpatient and inpatient services for the local population and in doing so, foster excellent working relationships within and outside the General Surgical department, including medical, nursing, secretarial and support staff, General Practitioners and management teams. The post will also work with the Directorate Management team to assist in the strategic planning and modernisation of General Surgical services, deliver internal and external targets for patient activity and achieve financial balance. The post will be part of the consultant emergency on call rota on a 1:8 basis with a 10-session job plan with enhanced payment for the on-call commitment.

Job responsibilities

• Provide professional and managerial supervision of junior medical staff.
• Follow UpToDate evidence-based practice for patients under their care to deliver safe and robust surgical management: allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff, to ensure that concise agreed management plans are clearly documented in the medical notes of all patients.
• Undertake ward rounds to identify and assess problems, plan management of care, and be actively available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely.
• Continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care: allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff, ensuring that concise agreed management plans are clearly displayed in the notes of patients with complex conditions.
• Ensure that an appropriate model of care is adopted which recognises the involvement of the multi-disciplinary team, the holistic needs of the patient and their family.
• Ensure that the use of medical and nursing resources within the department are utilised to the maximum potential.
• Assist the multi-disciplinary team in the production of referenced, evidence-based guidelines which are dated, signed and reviewed annually or more frequently in light of new evidence.
• Work with the rest of the consultant team to provide strong professional leadership within the department and be mentored in the delivery of a high-quality service provided by well-trained staff within clear departmental policies and procedures.
• Develop and maintain good communication with clinical colleagues across the Health Board regarding the treatment of their patients and the appropriate use of the departments resources.

Qualifications

Essential

• MBChB/MBBS or equivalent FRCS or equivalent At time of interview, the candidate must be: On the specialist register Or be within 6 months of the anticipated CCT / CESR (CT) date if progress has been satisfactory and it is anticipated that the outcome of the final ARCP will recommend that training will be completed by the time the recommend CCT / CESR (CT) date is reached Or have a primary medical qualification and a recognised specialist qualification from an EEA country or Switzerland which will allow directed entry onto the Specialist Register
• Prior to taking up the post the candidate must be on the Specialist Register
• Higher degree or Fellowship
• Previous experience in management of general/emergency surgery including laparoscopic management of benign UGI disease.
• Evidence of ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients undergoing Surgery
• JAG accreditation for upper GI endoscopy is essential
• Experience in managing emergency surgery
• Evidence of high level of skill in teaching medical, nursing and other professional colleagues in formal and informal modes
• Evidence of active and constructive involvement in clinical audit or quality improvement and the implementation of actions to be taken on the basis of outcomes
• Experience in advanced laparoscopic procedures would be an advantage but not essential
• Evidence of active involvement in risk management
• Evidence of personal involvement in management and administrative roles in health care
