Consultant General Paediatrician

We are currently in an exciting period of expansion and development for Child Health services in East Kent Hospitals. Our most recent CQC inspection rated us GOOD for SAFE and WELL LED and we are striving to achieve excellence with our consultant workforce increasing to ensure outstanding care for the local population and meet the RCPCH Facing the Future recommendations.

Applications are invited for a General Paediatrician attracting 8 PA's, at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury with on call component in Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital alongside the current existent 13 consultant participants. Opportunities are available for development of sub-specialty interests. We aim for every consultant to excel in both clinical and non-clinical endeavours, including clinical leadership, research, teaching and other allied areas, supported by innovative development programs provided within the trust.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will primarily be based at Kent and Canterbury hospital. They will deliver general paediatric clinics, associated admin work, and have proportionate SPA time. An important purpose of this role is to support care of CYP attending the Children's Assessment Centre (CAC) including Dolphin Ward. They will support the care of children having ambulatory procedures (such as food challenges or complex endocrine testing) under the care of paediatrics. They will be available to support the care of CYP admitted under surgical teams for day procedures (it is not expected they will need to provide routine input, but will be available to provide an urgent paediatric review for the times at which CYP are admitted). This will include a scheduled shift until 7pm once a month to support CYP recovering from afternoon surgery lists.

The appointee will also participate in the Emergency pathway (EP) rota covering a 2pm to 9pm resident shift, to support flow in the general paediatric unit, SCBU, the children's assessment unit and paediatric pathway via the Emergency Department (ED - with full support of ED staff) including the paediatric resuscitation bay. Travel from the base site would be included in this case.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
  • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • On the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of CCT at time of scheduled interview
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), ILETS, or graduate of a UK Medical School
  • APLS or equivalent provider status MRCPCH
  • Valid BLS Training
  • Other awards / titles e.g., Honorary lecturer
  • Other post graduate qualification or clear potential to achieve e.g., MD/PhD
  • APLS, EPALS or NLS Instructor
  • Evidence of leadership attributes and experience
Skills and Experience
  • Is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training
  • Commitment to maintaining & developing knowledge
  • Displays sound professional judgement.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project,
  • Experience working in NHS

Clinical Governance
