Job summary
The post offered is that of Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry (10PA), working in the Barnet North Core Community Team. The team is aligned to the Primary Care GP Locality in the North of the Borough. The post holder will share consultant lead responsibilities with one full-time substantive consultant, ensuring high-quality, patient-centered, effective, and safe care. This role involves responsibility for adults with complex mental health presentations. The North Team is one of three adult core community teams within Barnet (North, South, and West), consisting of multidisciplinary professionals including nursing, social work, psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, graduate mental health workers, community engagement workers, supported by a dedicated admin team. The service emphasizes recovery-focused care, shifting from symptom management to focusing on individual strengths and future goals, helping individuals to be in control of their lives and seek opportunities beyond their conditions. It caters to adults with a range of mental health difficulties, often with complex needs requiring secondary mental health services.
Main duties of the job
A detailed job description is attached. Support is available for newly appointed consultants through the StartWell group, including mentorship by a senior consultant. The post holder will have consultant and RC responsibility for a defined caseload under the Barnet West Core Community Mental Health Team. Responsibilities include assessment of new patients, clinical supervision of assessments by team members, formulation using a biopsychosocial model, ensuring evidence-based, patient-centered, recovery-oriented practice, providing clinical and professional leadership, and participating in management activities. Service development and quality improvement aligned with the Trust's vision are core. The post requires compliance with legal obligations under the Mental Health Act (MHA), including assessments and acting as Responsible Clinician for detained patients.
