Job description

Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist - Tower Hamlets / Woodberry Ward

The Trust is seeking a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist to work in the Forensic Service. The post is available due to an expansion in the community forensic service and a departing consultant.

This is a full-time 10 PA appointment. The postholder will spend approximately 5 PAs on Woodberry Ward and 5 PAs in Tower Hamlets. Interested candidates in part-time or flexible working should contact us to discuss arrangements.

The post involves joining four existing consultants in the low secure service. The East London area served by the Trust is highly diverse and deprived, presenting significant challenges for health service provision, including high levels of mental health issues, substance misuse, and offending behavior.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership to the Tower Hamlets community forensic team, working alongside a 0.5 WTE colleague, and to Woodberry Ward.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Hold consultant responsibility for approximately half of the patients under the Tower Hamlets Community Forensic Team and for inpatients on Woodberry Ward.
  • Provide clinical leadership to both teams.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent qualification.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
  • GMC registration with a license to practice at appointment.
  • On the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of achieving it, or able to attain within three months.
  • Approved under S12 or able to achieve within three months.
  • In good standing with GMC, with no warnings or conditions on practice.
Transport
  • Ability to travel within East London and between clinical sites.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
  • Understanding of forensic psychiatry.
  • Strong clinical skills with a bio-psycho-social approach and broad medical knowledge.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Decision-making based on evidence and experience, including input from others.
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
  • Relevant specialist/sub-specialist NHS or equivalent experience.
Academic and Continuing Professional Development
  • Interest and experience in Quality Improvement.
  • Participation in CPD.
  • Ability to evaluate clinical evidence.
  • Experience in clinical audit and service evaluation.
  • Ability to teach and train at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Reflective practice on CPD activities.
  • Experience in research or service evaluation, with evidence of achievements.
  • Leadership in clinical audits leading to service improvements.
