Job description

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Hospital Bury and provide senior medical cover on Madison Ward, our 13-bedded medium secure service for men.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing the care of all ward inpatients as required, and will have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward, ensuring their quality in accordance with GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.

This role offers the opportunity to be the driving force for life-changing treatment, fully supported by a Specialty Doctor, Medical Secretary, and a first-class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists. There is also potential for career progression to Medical Director Level through our management schemes.

Main duties of the job

Cygnet Hospital Bury provides a wide range of inpatient mental health services for men and women, including specialist deaf services and CAMHS provision for adolescents. Madison Ward is a 13-bed medium secure ward for men, delivering care for those with enduring mental health needs, co-morbidity, and challenging behaviors in a calm, therapeutic environment focused on service user experience, shared care, and safety.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Lead on the provision of high-quality care to service users admitted to Madison Ward
  • Act as a positive role model, demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, families, visitors, and staff
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations of service users
  • Conduct investigations, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Perform ward rounds, patient reviews, and clinical audits
  • Implement risk assessments, risk management, and embed clinical governance
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and attend hearings
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfers and leave approvals
  • Maintain accurate patient records
  • Communicate regularly with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager
  • Engage with patients, relatives, staff, and other stakeholders through effective communication and reporting
  • Participate in academic meetings and adhere to professional standards for CPD as set by GMC, the Department of Health, and the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Contribute to the Telephone On-call rota (1 in 13 weekdays / 1 in 15 weekends)
