The Role

We are expanding our panel of consultants and need an experienced Costs Draftsman with demonstrable Legal Aid expertise. You will draft and, where agreed, negotiate Accounts/Bills for publicly funded cases—family, crime, housing, clinical negligence or judicial review.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft detailed Legal Aid (CCMS/CLS) Bills, High Cost Case Plans and inter partes Accounts.
• Prepare Points of Objection/Replies and post-assessment amendments.
• Liaise with solicitors, counsel, LAA or Auditor as required.
• (Optional) Attend remote or in-person hearings for assessment.
• Meet agreed turnaround times and quality benchmarks.
• Maintain accurate time recording and version control.

Essential Criteria

• Minimum 3 years’ costs-drafting experience, including legal-aid files.
• Strong working knowledge of CCMS, LAA guidance, CIV/CRM forms and Family/Crime/Clinical fixed fees.
• Familiarity with CPR Parts 44–47 and relevant Practice Directions.
• Proficiency in CostsMaster, ACL v10, or similar drafting software.
• Reliable internet access and secure data-handling setup (GDPR compliant).

Desirable

• Advocacy experience at detailed assessment / LAA appeals.
• ACL qualification or working toward it.
• Experience with inter partes Bills (CIV/PI/HDR).
