Job summary
A large National Health Service Trust seeks a Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon to provide high-quality surgical care and outpatient services. Successful candidates will primarily manage cases involving colorectal resections and general surgical emergencies. This full-time position offers the chance to work in a dynamic and supportive environment across various sites. Ideal candidates should have robust experience in both malignant and benign colorectal conditions and engage in laparoscopic surgery.
Qualifications

- Provide consultant level General Surgery on call duties.

We welcome applications for the post of Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon, Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSEFT). Full-time, substantive posts are available following new investment in the General Surgery Directorate focused on Colorectal Cancer delivery and supporting the provision of elective and emergency General Surgery.
The Department of Colorectal Surgical provides general surgical and specialist colorectal care to patients across all 3 main acute sites at MSEFT; Basildon University Hospital, Broomfield hospital in Chelmsford or Southend University hospital, with consultant posts available at each of these sites. Successful candidates will be principally based at one of these sitesbut may be expected to work across different sites depending on professional or service needs. MSEFT is one of the largest Trusts in the country serving a population in excess of 1.2 million people. The colorectal department is the 3rdlargest in the country by volume of major cancer resections with an expanding colorectal robotic-surgical programme, with 3 Da Vinci robots across the Trust; complex pelvic surgery and cancer centre at Southend Hospital; established Neurogastroenterology and pelvic floor services; and a complex abdominal wall service at Broomfield site.

To provide consultant level General Surgery on call duties (1 in 10). This will include on site day-time cover and post take ward rounds, including emergency operating, although senior support can be provided.
To perform independent elective operating for the elective recovery of patients on the long waiting list, this may include working on Saturdays with compensatory days off during the week.
To provide outpatient colorectal and general surgical clinic service; this may include minor procedures
To provide specialist care in laparoscopic colorectal surgery
To participate in colorectal MDTs
To participate in ‘hot’ laparoscopic cholecystectomy list cover
To provide Emergency Surgical Ambulatory Care Clinics

Applicants should be experienced in major colorectal resections for both malignant and benign conditions. There may be opportunity to support applicants with benign subspeciality interests including Inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders and complex abdominal wall. Expertise in management of elective paediatric general surgery would also be desirable but is not essential.
As well as being proficient in the subspecialist management of colorectal disease, successful candidates will be expected to manage general surgical conditions such as benign coloproctological disorders, abdominal wall and groin hernias. The postholders are required to contribute to the management of General Surgical emergencies in adults and non-specialised emergency general surgery conditions in children, at 1 in 10 frequency.
