About the Organisation:
Public Health Scotland launched on 1st April 2020 as a national health board, employing around 1200 people, and with an annual budget of around £101 million. Public Health Scotland aims for a Scotland where everyone thrives, life expectancy improves, and the health disparities between the poorest and wealthiest areas decrease.
The Post:
We have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Clinical Scientist in Virology to join the Public Health Microbiology (PHM) Division within the Clinical and Protecting Health Directorate in PHS. The division supports diagnosis and management of infectious diseases, characterizes microbial pathogens and variants, and aids outbreak and pandemic response to reduce the public health burden in Scotland.
The post holder will provide strategic leadership for national reference laboratory services in virology and contribute to incident and outbreak response with public health virology expertise. The role involves collaboration with Scottish Government, National Services Scotland, microbiological communities, and partners across the UK to develop a unified microbiology service for Scotland, aligned with the Genomic Strategy for Scotland (2023) and the Public Health Microbiology Strategy (2018).
The role requires working with partners such as Health Protection, microbiologists, and virologists across Scotland, engaging with networks like the Scottish Health Protection Network and Scottish Microbiology Virology Forum. The candidate will provide leadership, management, and expert advice on infectious disease surveillance, emerging infections, genomics, and intervention evaluation to improve population health outcomes.
You will employ an evidence-based approach to inform Public Health Scotland and partner activities, working collaboratively to drive change.
The post reports directly to the Head of Division, Public Health Microbiology.
The Candidate:
We seek a Consultant Clinical Scientist with specialist virology experience, knowledge, and expertise, with some senior-level experience in Public Health or Health Protection contexts.
Candidates must hold current registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council, Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath), or an equivalent qualification, and possess a PhD in a related field.
