Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesThe post holder will take a lead role in the development of the services carried out by the Radiation Protection Centre, which include:
• advising on the application of relevant legislation and development of policies and procedures to ensure that employers and staff comply
• provision of expert scientific advice, measurements, training and documentation
• provision of X-ray imaging equipment performance checks
• audits of radiology departments, users of radioactive substances and laser practices
• providing personnel radiation monitoring and results advice
• repair and calibration of radiation measuring instrumentation
• provision and updating of local radiation safety rules and risk assessments
• radioactive waste management
• responding to incidents involving inadvertent radiation exposure of patients, staff or members of the public
• organisation of training courses
• physics support to the London NHS Breast Screening Programme
• research and development and involvement in relevant national and international activities.

Person specificationQualificationsEssential criteria- Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject.
- Certificated Radiation Protection Adviser
- Certified Radioactive Waste Adviser
- Certified Medical Physics Expert
- LPA
- State registration as a Clinical Scientist
Desirable criteriaExperienceEssential criteria- Extensive experience in Radiation Protection
- Extensive experience of operating as a Radiation Protection Adviser
- Management experience (preferably in NHS)
Desirable criteria- Experience in managing external contracts for income generation
ClinicalEssential criteria- Broad advanced knowledge of other areas Medical Physics, including therapy procedures and practices.
