Consultant Clinical Scientist (Deputy Head of H&I)

Job Summary

NHS Blood and Transplant operates a network of centres across England and North Wales, collecting around 2 million units of blood and tissues annually. We convert these into safe blood components, blood, and tissue products for patient treatments, and provide specialist services supporting transfusion and transplantation.

We are seeking a Consultant Clinical Scientist - Deputy Head of Department in the Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Laboratory, NHSBT Birmingham. The successful candidate will work alongside the Head of Department to provide clinical services across a wide area. The laboratory is UKAS and EFI accredited, supporting various transplantation and immunogenetic services.

Main Duties
  • Ensure high-quality, appropriate, relevant, and reliable laboratory output.
  • Manage laboratory activities, oversee work standards, and deputise for the Head of Department as needed.
  • Lead scientific training supporting STP, HSST, MSc, PhD, and FRCPath candidates.
  • Participate in research and uphold high standards of work.
  • Promote NHSBT’s values of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity.
  • Provide scientific and technical input for H&I.
  • Manage operational activities and a large team within a designated budget.

Participation in the National H&I Consultant on-call rota for out-of-hours support and operational cover is required.

About You – Fully Qualified (8c)
  • Deep understanding of relevant policies, standards, and guidelines (e.g., GMP, UKAS, EFI).
  • Participation in professional activities at national/international levels.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and laboratory information systems.
  • Extensive diagnostic laboratory experience, particularly in histocompatibility & immunogenetics.
  • Leadership and management skills.
Qualifications and Training
  • PhD / DClinSci or equivalent in transfusion/transplantation or relevant science.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in H&I.
  • HPCP registered (must be maintained).
  • Commitment to CPD.
About You – Nearly Qualified (8b)
  • Understanding of relevant policies and standards.
  • Experience with IT, laboratory work, and NHSBT/wider healthcare community.
  • Experience in histocompatibility & immunogenetics, target setting, and staff management.
  • Working towards FRCPath Part 2; registration must be maintained.

  • Salary: £74,290 - £85,601 per annum (AfC).
