Consultant Clinical Scientist (Deputy Head of H&I)

Job Overview

NHS Blood and Transplant operates across England and North Wales, collecting and processing blood, tissues, and providing specialist services supporting transfusion and transplantation. We seek a qualified Consultant Clinical Scientist in the Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Laboratory at NHSBT Colindale to support clinical services across hospitals, including registry typing, blood transfusion, and immunogenetics services. The lab is UKAS and EFI accredited and supports NHSBT’s Genomics programme.

Main Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategies to maintain leadership in the field.
  • Ensure high-quality, consistent laboratory output.
  • Manage laboratory activities, including deputising for the Head of Department.
  • Support scientific training and research activities.
  • Lead NHSBT’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Provide scientific and technical input for H&I services.
  • Oversee operational activities and manage team and budget.

Participation in the national H&I Consultant on-call rota for out-of-hours support is required.

Candidate Profile
Fully Qualified (8c)
  • Deep understanding of relevant policies, standards, and guidelines (e.g., GMP, GCLP, CPA, EFI, UKBTS, BCSH).
  • Experience in professional activities at a national/international level.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Extensive diagnostic laboratory experience, particularly in histocompatibility & immunogenetics.
  • Leadership and management skills.
Qualifications and Training
  • PhD/DClinSci or equivalent in transfusion/transplantation science.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in H&I.
  • HPCP registration (must be maintained).
  • Commitment to CPD.
Nearly Qualified (8b)
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and standards.
  • Experience with IT and in diagnostic laboratories.
  • Post-registration experience in histocompatibility & immunogenetics.
  • Leadership and management skills.
Qualifications and Training
  • FRCPath Part 1 in H&I; working towards Part 2.
  • Management qualification or courses.
  • Membership of professional bodies (e.g., BSHI, EFI).
  • HPCP registration (must be maintained).
