Job summary

University Hospitals of Derby & Burton are seeking to recruit a Consultant Clinical Oncologist, who, together with 17 other Consultant Oncologists, will provide a comprehensive service for the people of Southern Derbyshire and East Staffordshire.

We are looking for a Clinical Oncologist with an interest in Lung, Gynae, and/or CRC; however, there could be some flexibility, and we would be happy to discuss this.

The posts are based at the Royal Derby Hospital with work at Queens Hospital Burton, providing Cancer Services for the population of Southern Derbyshire and South East Staffordshire.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be responsible for:

  1. Provision of a comprehensive service in Oncology with consultant colleagues, including new patient and follow-up clinics at Derby and Burton. The Department also undertakes a variety of joint clinics with other specialties.
  2. Provision of emergency cover and reciprocal cover for your consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave, on a shared basis. This will include care of patients and supervision of junior doctors.
  3. The care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the Department.
  4. Undertaking teaching/training duties as required and actively participating in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes.
  5. Participating in clinical and medical audit and actively contributing to both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance.
  6. Actively participating in continuing medical education (CME).

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential):

  • FRCR or equivalent
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register or CCT or within 6 months of CCT attainment at interview; evidence of GMC processing must be provided prior to interview
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent

Qualifications (Desirable):

  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree

Experience (Essential):

  • Training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in Clinical Oncology
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Research experience

Experience (Desirable):

  • Experience above SpR grade
  • Peer-reviewed publications

Knowledge (Desirable):

  • Knowledge of Oncology within UHDB

Management and Admin Experience (Essential):

  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and Clinical Governance
  • Experience in Clinical Audit

Communication Skills (Essential):

  • Experience in formal presentations

Desirable:

  • Experience presenting at national/international conferences
