Job description

The histopathologists at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) all report in subspecialist areas there is flexibility to accommodate the incumbent of this post in a number of these areas by mutual agreement, depending on the individual's interests and departmental needs. Current departmental needs include Head and Neck reporting, and Sarcoma reporting.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to develop areas of subspecialisation and join the relevant reporting teams related to those areas. Coronial post mortem work is available for interested applicants however, it is not mandatory

There may be an opportunity for a mutually agreed re-organisation amongst the present pathologists current areas of specialist interest to allow the incumbent to become lead pathologist in an area of interest. Participation in the reporting of some of the following areas would be particularly welcomed: soft tissue pathology, thoracic pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, head & neck pathology, medical renal biopsies.

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications, Skills

Essential

  • Full (1) and specialist registration (2) (and a licence to practice) with the GMC (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
  • Applicants that are UK trained must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CTT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. International applicants must have submitted their CESR portfolio or have certificates of equivalence.
  • Current holder of FRCPath II

Desirable

  • Other postgraduate qualification (MSc) (1), or (M/FRCP or equivalent) (2)
  • Evidence of relevant secondment into, or consultant-level experience of, areas of departmental need (Soft tissue, Head & Neck, Thoracic)

Management

Essential

  • Working knowledge and experience of the NHS and its organisation

Desirable

  • Formal management training

Teaching

Essential

  • Ability and commitment in teaching pathology to STs and to other professional groups.

Desirable

  • Enthusiasm for and experience of teaching medical students.

Research and Clinical Audit

Essential

  • Experience of audit in clinical practice

Desirable

  • Evidence of continuing research with publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Interest and experience in clinical trials reporting

Interpersonal skills

Essential

  • A proven track record to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to establish good working relationships with colleagues.
  • An ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.

Desirable

  • Demonstrates good leadership qualities
