Job summary

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a Consultant Cardiothoracic Radiologist at Basildon University Hospital. The post focuses on advanced cardiothoracic imaging with opportunities to develop cardiac MRI expertise within an integrated radiology service.

Qualifications

  • Formal subspecialty training with a cardiothoracic imaging fellowship including cardiac MRI.
  • Level 3 accreditation in Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a diagnostic radiology service of high quality.
  • Develop the general and specialist imaging service to support the Trust.

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Cardiothoracic Radiologist to join the expanding Radiology Service at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, helping to deliver exceptional imaging services to the population of South Essex.

We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in Cardiac MRI, or those who are keen to develop and achieve accreditation in this specialist area. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the continued growth of advanced cardiothoracic imaging services supporting both acute hospital care and Community Diagnostic Centres linked to Basildon University Hospital.

You will join one of the largest and most progressive radiology services in the region, working within a fully integrated Trust-wide team of over 500 staff and 60 Consultant Radiologists across our three hospital sites. Supported by strong clinical leadership and a collaborative culture, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality diagnostic services, shaping clinical pathways and contributing to the development of imaging protocols and service innovation.

Main duties of the job

Deliver a diagnostic radiology service of high quality.

Contribute to development of the general and specialist imaging service to support the Trust in ensuring provision of high quality diagnostic support throughout the week.

Work flexibly with colleagues to support the timely management of emergencies and inpatients.

Undertake an appropriate share of the on-call rota for diagnostic radiology.

Participate in multi-disciplinary clinical meetings (MDT).

Ensure that standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit, evidence- based research and appraisal.

Be familiar with the College curricula for junior doctor training and contribute to their training requirements, including tutorials, on-the-job teaching, mentoring, appraisal and assessment.

Contribute to the training of undergraduates and advanced practitioner radiographers.

Maintain personal professional development in accordance with the requirements of the Royal College of Radiologists and the General Medical Council.

Ensure that new techniques (outside ethically approved research projects) are only introduced after appropriate training, with approval of the relevant clinical directorates and with arrangements for evaluation and an audit trail.

Qualifications
  • MBBS or Equivalent
  • entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Evidence of formal subspecialty training and cardiothoracic imaging fellowship with cardiac MRI
  • Level 3 accreditation/certification Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT
Experience
  • Expertise in performing and reporting cardiac MRI and CT
  • Experience in thoracic diagnostic CT
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients, including an ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in cardiothoracic imaging.
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
  • Expertise in CT guided thoracic intervention
  • Experience of simple interventional procedures (biopsy and drainage)
