West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in Heart Failure and Imaging to join its dynamic Cardiology team. The role includes outpatient clinics, MDT involvement, and a focus on advanced imaging such as cardiac CT, MRI and echo.

The post emphasises leadership in heart failure care across acute and community settings, including the Virtual Hospital and expansion of remote monitoring capabilities.

Qualifications

• Full GMC registration and licence to practise.
• CCT in Cardiology (or time in Specialist Register) and eligibility for Consultant role.
• MRCP or equivalent credentials.
• Experience with Virtual hospital management and heart failure care.
• BSE imaging accreditations in TTE/CMR and Cardiac CT levels.

Responsibilities

• Deliver a high-quality consultant-led Heart Failure service across acute, outpatient, and community pathways.
• Participate in complex imaging including cardiac CT, MRI and echo.
• Run outpatient clinics, including Heart Failure clinics and contribute to MDT activities.
• Support virtual ward rounds, triage referrals, and remote patient monitoring.
• Provide supervision to specialist nursing staff and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
• Contribute to service development and optimisation of Heart Failure pathways.

Consultant Cardiologist

Applicants are invited to join our dynamic Cardiology team and apply for the full-time substantive post of Consultant Cardiologist in Heart Failure and Imaging at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a progressive and nationally recognised Heart Failure service, including our award-winning Virtual Hospital and be a part of excellent, comprehensive imaging service.

The successful candidate will contribute to the management of patients with acute and chronic heart failure, working across acute and ambulatory settings. They will participate in complex imaging including cardiac CT, MRI and echo.

Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in heart failure and relevant expertise in imaging. The postholder will be responsible for delivering outpatient clinics, as well as contributing to the wider Heart Failure service within the Cardiology Department. This will include participation in Heart Failure MDT meetings, Virtual ward rounds, triaging of Heart Failure referrals, and providing supervision and support to specialist nursing staff.

The postholder will work in partnership with our team of specialist nurses and consultants, while also supporting our subspecialty services.

This post consists of 10 programmed activities.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will help deliver a high-quality, consultant-led Heart Failure service across acute, outpatient, and community pathways, working within a multidisciplinary team. They will participate in complex imaging including cardiac CT, MRI and echo.

The postholder will deliver outpatient clinics, including general cardiology and Heart Failure clinics, and contribute to acute heart failure management through a dedicated frontline session. They will also participate in the Virtual Hospital rota, supporting admission avoidance, early discharge, and remote patient monitoring.

The role includes Heart Failure triage and supervision of specialist nursing staff, alongside close working with multidisciplinary colleagues including physiologists and community teams.

The postholder will contribute to service development, and the ongoing optimisation of Heart Failure pathways, including expansion of virtual and community-based care.

Please note there is currently no commitment to General Medicine on-call duties within this role.

Person Specification

• Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice.
• CCT in Cardiology (or within 6 months at time of interview) or inclusion on the Specialist Register
• MRCP or equivalent
• Ability to offer a specialist clinical opinion on the full range of acute cardiac conditions, including emergencies
• Experience in Virtual hospital management and heart failure
• BSE accreditation in TTE / CMR level 3 /Cardiac CT level 2
• MD or PhD from UK University or equivalent
• Completed basic training in management skills
