Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Plastic Surgeon with a special interest in Burns, at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. This is a full-time post and to start as soon as possible.

The post holder will work as one of a team of Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeons, covering the Regional Burns Service in the Midlands. The adult burns centre is based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. Paediatric burns management takes place at the Birmingham Children's Hospital. In addition, the post holder will have the opportunity to do an additional plastic surgery subspecialities depending on experience and requirement of plastic surgery service.

Main duties of the job

The Job Plan will comprise of 10 programmed activities. This includes burns on-call. The job plan will be subject to the needs of the service and experience of the successful candidate. The final time table will be constructed following discussion with the successful candidate and will result in an agreed job plan. The job plan will be mainly in burns, but there will some opportunity to general plastic surgery and laser therapy.

The appointee will participate in the 1:7 burns on call rota (currently 1:7) covering the adult burns centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the paediatric burns centre at Birmingham Children Hospital Birmingham Children's Hospital. Also, the appointee will be part of burns MDT at both QEHB and BCH.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to departmental teaching and support juniors with projects leading to publications and presentations. Funding is available for approved study leave as defined in the Trust study leave policy. The involvement in continuing medical education is an integral part of the advertised post and as such, the successful candidate will be expected to support recruitment to clinical trials and practice evidence-based medicine. The appointee will be expected to participate in all aspects of clinical governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council GMC, with license to practice.
  • FRCS(Plast) or equivalent
  • On the GMC Specialist Registration in Plastic Surgery. Or within 6 months CCT Plastic surgery at time of application
  • A postgraduate degree / research degree in burns related topics, such as PhD or MD
  • Medical Laser Certificate
Experience
  • Specialist burns fellowship (6 months minimum) covering both adult and paediatric burns at senior level post FRCS Plastic in the burns centres.
  • Wide experience in total burn care, at a senior level in the NHS burns centres including surgical and non-surgical management of complex and major burns, both acute care and long term reconstruction
  • Experience in general plastic surgery.
  • Experience in Laser therapy
