Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical: The role involves theatre days with paediatric spinal and other surgeries, pre-op assessments, and flexible coverage for non-cardiac paediatric surgery, including on-call duties.

Teaching/Research: The post involves participation in teaching clinical students, training junior doctors, and contributing to examinations, integrated into daily clinical activities. Contributions to teaching, training, and research will be reviewed regularly.

Clinical Governance: The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities including audits, risk management, and quality improvement, complying with Trust and external standards.

Personal and Professional Development: The post-holder must stay updated in their field and may be supported with study leave for training, CME, and personal development, subject to Trust policies.

Management: The post requires working within Trust policies, managing resources responsibly, and undertaking administrative duties related to patient care and service management under supervision.

Person specification

Qualifications

• GMC-acceptable medical qualification
• GMC specialist registration or within 6 months of admission, or equivalent training/experience
• At least 6 months NHS anaesthesia experience in the UK
• Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) or equivalent
• CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent
• Postgraduate qualifications (MD, BSc, MSc, PhD)
• Additional advanced training or fellowships in relevant sub-specialties

Experience

• Ability to work independently at consultant level and as part of a team
• Experience in neonatal surgery and advanced training in neonatal emergency surgery
• Minimum 12 months advanced paediatric anaesthesia training
• Experience in paediatric/neonatal critical care or transport
• Decision-making at consultant level and managing complex cases
• Experience in paediatric spinal anaesthesia
