Job description

Job overview Applications are invited for the position of Consultant General Anaesthetist with a special interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia.

The Department provides Anaesthesia services for all major surgical specialties and operates across two sites. Most elective procedures are conducted at Castle Hill Hospital, while urgent care, obstetric, and paediatric services are based at Hull Royal Infirmary.

The Women’s and Children’s Hospital manages approximately 4,600 deliveries annually, with an elective caesarean section rate of 20% and an emergency caesarean section rate of 25%. Hull has a longstanding reputation as a centre for the practice and teaching of obstetric anaesthesia, with active research and audit programs and opportunities for clinical innovation.

Main duties of the job

The role involves providing input into the obstetric anaesthesia on-call rota, which operates at a 1:10 frequency at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

A standard full-time Job Plan includes 10 programmed activities (PAs): 7.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 PAs for supporting activities (SPAs). One PA covers on-call duties. The 1.5 SPAs are considered ‘core’ and include time for training, teaching, continuing professional development (CPD), audit, appraisal, clinical governance, and attendance at service meetings. There are opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching within the HYMS medical school curriculum. Additional SPA time can be allocated for research, clinical management, and educational supervision activities.
