Job description

Job overview: Applications are invited for the position of Consultant General Anaesthetist with special interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia.

The Department provides Anaesthesia services for all major surgical specialties and works across two sites. Most elective work takes place at Castle Hill Hospital whilst urgent care, obstetric and paediatric care is at Hull Royal Infirmary.

The Women’s and Children’s hospital manages about 4600 deliveries per year, with an elective caesarean section rate of 20% and an emergency caesarean section rate of 25%. For many years, Hull has been a leading centre for the practice and teaching of obstetric anaesthesia. There are active research and audit programs and opportunities for innovation in clinical practice.

Main duties of the job: The post will provide input into obstetric anaesthesia on-call rota 1:10 at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

A standard full time Job Plan will contain 10 programmed activities (PAs) comprising 7.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 for supporting activities (SPAs). 1 PA is for on-call. 1.5 SPAs are classed as ‘core’ and cover time for training, teaching, CPD, audit, appraisal, clinical governance and attendance at service meetings. There are opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching within the HYMS medical school curriculum. Additional SPA time can be allocated for research, clinical management and educational supervisor (ES) activity.

Working for your organisation: The Humber Health Partnership is one of the largest acute and community Partnership arrangements in the NHS, seeing well over one million patients every year and managing a budget of over £1.3 billion.

Made up of two Trusts - Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG) and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH) - our Partnership has significant ambitions and is committed to delivering world-class hospital and community services for the 1.65 million people we serve.

Together we employ nearly 20,000 staff. Our five main hospital sites are Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Scunthorpe General Hospital and Goole and District Hospital, for NLAG and Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital for HUTH.

As Teaching Hospitals working with the Hull York Medical School, we both lead and contribute to research in many areas - biomedical research, primary care, palliative medicine, cardiovascular and respiratory medicine, vascular surgery, cancer surgery and oncology.

We believe that by developing a diverse, inclusive, innovative, skilled and caring workforce, we can deliver excellent care to our patients and a great future for our employees, our Partnership and our community.
