Job Summary

The Anaesthetic department at Kings is delighted to advertise this Consultant in Anaesthesia post to cover for permanent full time role.

This post is aimed primarily at Consultant level anaesthetists wishing to gain experience in a broad range of anaesthesia as well as further experience in regional anaesthesia.

We deliver anaesthesia for a range of general and subspecialty areas including Neurosurgery, Cardio-thoracics, Hepatobiliary, Endocrine, Maxillofacial, Liver Transplant, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics and Major Trauma.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery and ongoing development of high-quality anaesthetic and perioperative services within a supportive and collaborative Trust environment.

The successful candidate will provide expert anaesthetic care across a range of elective and emergency surgical specialties, including participation in theatre sessions, pre-operative assessment, and perioperative management of complex patients.

Main Duties of the Job

As a Consultant Anaesthetist, you will play a key role in delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care, while working closely with surgical colleagues, multidisciplinary teams, and wider hospital services. You will be expected to provide senior clinical leadership, contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives, and support the training and supervision of junior doctors and other healthcare professionals.

The post offers opportunities to develop specialist interests in line with service needs and personal expertise, alongside active involvement in teaching, research, and innovation.

Job Responsibilities

The post will be based at Denmark Hill site and the proposed 10 PA Job Plan is attached. There will be an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the 1 PA being allocated for Supporting Professional Activity (CPD) and 0.5 SPA for new consultant development. In discussion with your department, further SPA may be allocated from team job planning for educational activities. Research time would normally be supported through external funding and or successful application for green shoots funding.

The On-Call commitment is for a 1:16 rota non-resident general consultant on-call, classed as Category A and a further 1:16 daytime weekend commitment which may include CEPOD, trauma or elective cover.

All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trusts sites as required by the service. As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trusts patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:

• The provision of a first class clinical service
• Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
• Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with Kings College London / KHP
• Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trusts procedures and operating policies
• Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts service plans
• Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Division or the Trust

Person Specification

Administration

• Experience in day to day organisation of anaesthetic services in a busy Teaching Hospital
• Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes

Management and Leadership

• Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
• Management course and/or qualification

Teaching

• Experience of undergraduate and post graduate teaching and exam preparation.

Qualifications & Registration

• Full Registration with GMC and completed subspecialty training programme in anaesthesia Eligible to apply for a Substantive Consultant post - CCT or within 6 months of completion
• FRCA or equivalent
• Masters degree or equivalent.
• Additional qualifications/diplomas in specialist areas for example, Perioperative Medicine, Trauma Sciences or Regional Anaesthesia

Training and Experience

• IAC and IACO
• Proven post-graduate experience in anaesthesia
• Wide experience in delivery of anaesthesia for general, major/high risk surgery and trauma/cepod surgery
• Experience of delivering anaesthesia independently and supervising junior colleagues within that capacity.
• Experience in ophthalmic anaesthesia and preoperative assessment
• Major traumaRegional anaesthesia competence Additional training/fellowship in a specialist area management experience
• Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects and QIPs
• Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of anaesthesia.
• Contribution to national projects
