Job description

We are seeking a dynamic Consultant Adult & Paediatric Spinal Surgeon to join our expanding spinal surgery team at Barts Health NHS Trust. This substantive post supports the development of our complex spinal surgical service, which plays a vital role in the Trust's elective programme and major trauma care.

You will primarily work across the Royal London Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital sites, participating in a 1:9 Consultant of the Week (COW) on-call rota based at the Royal London Hospital. This role includes contributing to the establishment of a consultant-led designated spinal trauma rota, delivering care for both adult and paediatric spinal trauma patients.

The position offers an exciting opportunity to lead in the development of our paediatric scoliosis service and to deliver comprehensive spinal trauma and elective care within a hyper-specialised, multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

1. Patient Care: Maintain continuous responsibility for the care of patients under their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care. The appointee will be expected to lead ward rounding in the morning during their Consultant of the Week duties and on their post-operative patients. The post holder will have full professional independence in medical matters but will be managerially accountable to the Trust and the Chief Executive through their lead clinician, clinical director, and CAG group director.

2. Leadership: Lead, develop, and organise the services under their charge in alignment with the Trust's business plans. Engage with key stakeholders, including the lead clinician, General Manager, Service Manager and Clinical Director for Neurosciences.

3. Efficiency Improvement: Contribute significantly to departmental initiatives to enhance efficiency, including:

Meeting the 18-week referral-to-treatment standard.

Reducing patient length of stay.

Optimising the ratio of new to follow-up outpatient attendances in line with commissioner expectations.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Comprehensive Spinal Surgical Service: Provide a full adult and paediatric emergency spinal surgical service, including instrumented surgeries for the population of North East London. This includes:

Inpatient and day-case surgeries.

Ward rounding, on each morning of the COW-week and on post-operative patients.

Outpatient clinics, including supervision of Registrar, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Extended Scope Practitioner clinics.

Ongoing and regular liaison with the provided patient pathway coordinators (PPCs) provided to support the appointees practice.

2. On Call Service Adult Spine: Participation in a 1 in 9 Consultant of the Week on-call rota as part of a 24/7 service. Complex Spine Consultants are on call and receive referrals that require Instrumentation, Spine Infections and Metastatic Spine Cord Compression (MSCC) referrals.

3. On Call Service Paediatric Traumatic Spine: As part of the Adult On Call service, the post holder will be expected to support emergency paediatric referrals.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview or CESR/Portfolio pathway, or alternative routes to specialist registration
  • Full GMC Registration

Desirable

  • Doctorate or Master's level research degree or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in scoliosis surgery and Major Trauma Centre oncall for spines
  • Complex Spine Fellowship training.

Desirable

  • Experience of working as Complex Spine Consultant
  • Fellowship in Paediatric Scoliosis Spine Surgery & Adult Spine Trauma

Knowledge

Essential

  • Clinical expertise in complex instrumented spines
  • Paediatric deformity scoliosis service and trauma Instrumented trauma service for adult and paediatric spines
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on a range of elective and emergency problems Full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

Desirable

  • ATLS
  • Previous consultant-level experience in scoliosis operating Experience in teaching clinical skills to undergraduates
