Job description

Job summary

Applications are invited for a full-time Consultant in Acute Medicine to join the Emergency Department and Acute Services Care Group at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

This is an exciting time to join BHRUT, given the focus on unplanned emergency care and the opportunities both clinical and non-clinical.

We are a tertiary centre for neurosciences and one of 10 national elective surgical centres. We are expanding unplanned emergency care services, including developing patient-centred pathways such as OPAT and expanding our SDEC on both sites, which has received significant financial investment.

You will be welcomed into a friendly, dynamic, and forward-thinking care group whose core values focus on patient care and staff wellbeing. We listen to ideas, support, nurture, and turn visions into reality. We are a team that works, laughs, and socialises together.

Come and join the team!

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an existing team of dynamic acute medical consultants with various specialist interests. Our passion has improved performance, received positive feedback, and we invest equally in people and service.

You will work as part of a cross-site service within:

Ambulatory Emergency Care/SDEC

We seek dynamic, forward-thinking individuals focused on patient care. We promote ideas and development—nothing is impossible.

About us

We're an organization continually improving, driven by a commitment to deliver high-quality care and patient satisfaction. We are no longer in special measures; we've opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH), and our CEO, Matthew Trainer, was named top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.

Our main sites are KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments serving over 330,000 visitors last year. We are campaigning for £35m to transform Queen's A&E and eliminate corridor care.

Our patients benefit from initiatives like the Women's Health Hub in Ilford, an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch, and Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.

These CDCs operate 12 hours daily, 7 days a week, providing an additional 94,000 scans annually.

Our diverse staff of over 8,000 come from 146 countries, many work flexibly, and over 400 are enrolled in Ofsted-accredited apprenticeships. We are proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We are introducing an electronic patient record system that will benefit staff and patients alike.
