What will I be doing as an apprentice?

As a BAM Apprentice, you will learn from experienced colleagues and add value to the team. No prior experience is required as we will teach you everything about materials testing in construction; just be ready to work hard and get your hands dirty! The role offers experience both on-site and in the lab, carrying out testing.

BAM has been a key player in the Hinkley Point C project, one of the UK’s largest infrastructure developments. This role offers the chance to contribute to similar projects, gaining hands-on experience in quality control and compliance in major construction environments.

This is a unique opportunity to develop a career in construction, gaining skills highly sought after. You will learn methods to examine construction materials, working towards excellence in areas such as:

  • Sampling and testing in line with Standards and customer specifications
  • Conducting risk assessments at work
  • Checking calibration of equipment and reporting damages
  • Recording data accurately
  • Communicating instructions based on client specifications
  • Providing data to demonstrate compliance
  • Carrying out testing with calibrated equipment
  • Delivering work programmes with site teams
  • Maintaining a site diary
  • Keeping a CPD record and CV for career development
  • Performing other relevant duties as required

What could the future look like?

BAM Nuttall is committed to developing talent. The apprenticeship aims to transform you into a skilled technician, with potential for permanent employment and progression. Many apprentices have advanced their careers within BAM.

The training provides pathways into manufacturing, construction, engineering, aerospace, automotive, or R&D industries, with a growing demand for skilled professionals in quality and reliability testing.

This apprenticeship also serves as a stepping stone to further qualifications like the Level 6 BSc Apprenticeship, enabling specialization or leadership roles.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

About You

The ideal candidate is reliable, motivated, detail-oriented, and able to follow instructions. You should be methodical, accurate, and take pride in getting testing parameters right. You should be curious about science and technology, enthusiastic, collaborative, and eager to learn. Even if you don’t meet all criteria, if you’re passionate about the role, get in touch.

Please note: Due to the remote location, a Full UK Driving License and access to your own car are required.

Experience

Previous experience is not essential. We value attitude and aptitude over qualifications. We’re interested in individuals eager to learn and grow.

Qualifications

Enthusiasm and a desire to learn matter more than school results. Successful apprentices are curious, honest about their knowledge, considerate, self-reflective, and eager to develop their skills.

How does the apprenticeship work?

Over 21 months, you will dedicate at least 6 hours weekly to ‘off the job’ training, including virtual lessons, online learning, shadowing, mentoring, and assignments. This will lead to a Level 3 Materials Testing Technician apprenticeship, delivered by Tiro and BAM mentors. You will gain practical experience and earn a salary, avoiding student debt.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet UK Government requirements: over 18, not in full-time education, UK resident for 3 years, and right to work in the UK. If you don’t meet these yet, express interest, and we will discuss further.
