The Role

The Construction Manager (Major Works) will manage & direct construction activities for large-scale telecommunications projects across Australia. Drawing on solid industry experience delivering major civil infrastructure projects, the Construction Manager will exhibit a strong ability to resolve complex construction challenges and deliver quality project outcomes.

The individual in this role is articulate and perceptive, with an ability to effectively listen and understand key project requirements. Collaborating closely with multiple internal functions including Design, Field and Project Management, you will be highly skilled at communicating complex construction information in a clear and concise manner.

The role will require you to oversee and coordinate the civil construction activities of critical (primarily regional) infrastructure projects that allow AARNet to successfully deliver the next generation of telecommunications network to Australia’s academic and research sector. You will manage projects that are located across Australia from your base, with the opportunity to travel on occasion.

Role Accountabilities:

Responsibilities

  • Direct and control civil construction activities for complex, large-scale telecommunications infrastructure builds, ensuring they successfully meet design construction specifications, required project objectives and AARNet’s quality and safety standards.
  • Effectively manage and monitor construction performance and progress, proactively analysing project construction information and using construction methodologies to make effective project delivery decisions.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of broader project requirements & objectives, by collaborating with internal Route Designers, Project Managers & Field staff to effectively anticipate construction-based challenges and proactively mitigate risks to delivery.
  • Implement and maintain rigorous quality and safety management measures within projects.
  • Manage project volumes and deliver a range of construction builds that meet a variety of technical and timing requirements.
  • Empathise and engage meaningfully with project stakeholders (both internal and external), drawing on strong interpersonal & communication skills to resolve conflict and network positive delivery outcomes for impacted parties.
  • Identify, plan and implement resolutions to complex construction challenges, presenting solution plans to your leader if you need to escalate challenges.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with suppliers by providing direction on projects, ensuring timely support on queries, and fostering positive working relationships for AARNet.
  • Tertiary level qualification in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management or equivalent, or substantial experience in a similar role.
  • Robust knowledge of / experience with telecommunications infrastructure construction - building Telco projects in different regions and demographics.
  • SHEQ knowledge and experience in similar sized infrastructure projects.
  • Formal Project Management Certification(s) or extensive demonstrated experience.
  • Competent using a broad range of office software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel & Project and are comfortable using scheduling software applications.
  • Subcontractor Management and Compliance.
  • A robust understanding of Quality and Safety management frameworks for large scale Telco projects.
  • Understanding of project-based risk management is essential.
  • Excellent time management skills as well as strong planning and organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management ability.
