Sir Robert McAlpine has secured a prestigious contract to construct a state-of-the-art Battery Manufacturing Facility. The initial phase includes the design and construction of a new 15GWh lithium-ion battery facility, ancillary buildings, and site-wide external works.

This Construction Manager role will oversee the £60 million Envelope Package of our £850 million project in Bridgwater, Somerset.

The Construction Manager role:

Reporting to the Project Manager, you will lead a team of Section Managers, Package Engineers, works staff, and subcontractors to deliver the project safely and to high standards. You will ensure technical compliance with contract documents, specifications, and drawings.

You will oversee the timely execution of operations during pre-construction and construction phases, occasionally acting as Project Manager during absences. You will manage interfaces with internal departments and external agencies, including Architects, Engineers, Construction Workers, Sub-contractors, Client agents, Clerk of Works, and Site Staff.

You will identify and mitigate programme risks and address shortcomings in processes or systems. Embody the SRM Values and the McAlpine Way through the Build Sure Commitments, serving as a role model and promoting these principles within your team. Foster a high-performance culture by setting SMART objectives and providing guidance, advice, and feedback. Promote inclusive behaviors to create an environment where ideas are shared, and continuous improvement is encouraged.

Your profile:

  • Strong Leadership skills
  • Experience delivering multi-million-pound building projects
  • Good knowledge of building products, construction details, and relevant rules, regulations, and standards
  • Familiarity with construction software packages (Asta PowerProjects, Navisworks, Trimble Fieldview desirable)
  • Understanding of various contract forms, such as NEC4 and JCT D&B
  • Proficiency in construction software packages
  • Ability to operate effectively while maintaining a strategic perspective
  • Strong leadership and human resource management skills
  • Qualifications such as NEBOSH and SMSTS are desirable
  • A degree in civil or structural engineering, construction management, or a related field
  • Up-to-date SMSTS and relevant Construction Skills Certificate Card
  • Membership in a construction industry-related professional body, such as CIOB or ICE
