At Severn Trent, we’re embarking on an exciting £415m project to replace 870 miles of old water pipes across the Midlands – and we want you to be part of it. The new pipes we’re installing will last for up to 100 years. This is the biggest investment in water infrastructure in the region in a decade, and it’s set to improve water quality, reduce leaks, and make our water supply more reliable for millions of people.

To bring this vision to life, we’re creating new jobs across the region. Whether you’re based in Birmingham, Nottingham, or anywhere in between, we’ve got opportunities for you to help shape the future of water in the Midlands.

Want to be part of this transformative journey?

We are looking for a Network Construction Lead Operative to join our team and be responsible for managing significant, large scale construction activity across multiple sites.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

As our new Network Construction Lead Operative, you’ll be responsible for successfully completing the Main renewal scheme activity as allocated on a particular site, while ensuring our customers safely receive a constant supply of good quality drinking water.

You’ll be the senior member of the Construction team on site, coordinating activities of colleagues, providing support and guidance. You’ll also be responsible for risk assessing and delivering DMA Main Renewal schemes in accordance with relevant SSOW and SOPS.

Additionally, you’ll ensure all DMA renewal schemes are delivered to ST high quality standards whilst adhering to company ODI targets. The role holder will oversee and support contractors and other external stakeholders on site.

This role requires a 42-hour work week, Monday to Friday, starting at 7:30 AM and ending at 4:30 PM, with a half-hour early finish at 4:00 PM on Fridays.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensure CDM compliance on site, responsible for health, safety, and well-being of team members, visitors, contractors, and the public, in accordance with CDM regulations.
  • Communicate with the on-site team to ensure tasks are carried out safely and effectively, liaising with external stakeholders such as utility providers, asset owners, local authorities, and customers.
  • Identify and mitigate potential hazards, documenting findings in daily dynamic risk assessments, ensuring full compliance with SOPS for all activities.
  • Manage impacts related to activities, including impacts on wider organization, customers, external businesses (e.g., road closures, traffic management, supply interruptions), and deliver construction work within planned budget.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

Ideal candidates will have experience working on Mains Renewal schemes and/or hold a formal NCO Qualification, within a utility-based industry. Experience coordinating activities, supporting teams, and liaising with stakeholders in a construction environment is essential.

You should demonstrate awareness and practical experience of CDM Regulations, risk & opportunity identification, and be trained in Utility Avoidance and Location, Thrust Boring, Safe Digging, and 360 Excavator below 10T. Completion of all NRSWA modules is required.

Knowledge of Mains Renewal processes, options, risks, and the ability to work effectively under pressure, make prompt decisions, and communicate clearly is important. Experience supporting teams and coordinating activities in a construction setting is preferred.

As travel is required, holding a full U.K driving license is necessary.

We value character, positivity, and a caring attitude. We welcome diversity and encourage applicants from all backgrounds who want to make a difference.

Working at Severn Trent offers career development, competitive benefits, and environmental and community involvement. Perks include:
