Job summary

National Museums seeks a Conservator: Masterplan to safeguard our collection during a major decant, with a focus on stone, wall paintings and mosaics. This full-time, on-site fixed-term role runs for 12 months in Bloomsbury, London.

The Masterplan programme represents a unique opportunity to safeguard and research world-class cultural heritage. You will apply hands-on conservation and preventive methods, contribute to surveys, documentation and data analysis, and collaborate with Conservation,

Qualifications

  • Professional conservation qualification with emphasis on stone, wall paintings and mosaics.
  • Hands-on experience conserving these materials.
  • Knowledge of deterioration, preventive conservation and ethics.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and work well in a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Good IT skills and familiarity with relevant software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out conservation treatments focused on stone, wall paintings and mosaics.
  • Support the large-object decant project and storage handling.
  • Contribute to surveys, documentation and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with Conservation, Collection Care and Moves teams.
  • Ensure health and safety practices are followed.
  • Assist with outreach, public speaking and funding bids.
