Job summary

A leading company in conservation is seeking a professional to oversee the survey and care of photographic collections for a 12-month project. The ideal candidate will have an MA in practical conservation and two years' experience managing conservation projects, ensuring preservation standards are met while engaging with PRONI staff and the public.

Hours of work: Full time 37 Hours per week (Monday to Friday 9-5pm)

Rate of Pay: £17.94 per hour

Length of Assignment: 12 Months

Main Duties:

The main roles and responsibilities of the post(s) are as follows:

  • Undertake a survey of PRONI’s photographic collections and photographic content within wider collections to identify any cellulose nitrate negatives held.Assess condition and specify improvements for the collection care of PRONI’s photographic and audio/visual material.Identify different photographic processes and recommend suitable housing and optimum environmental conditions.Contribute to specification of requirements for offsite storage provision in relation to photographic and A/V material as required. Manage Conservation/Preservation staff assigned to the project, supervising their work and liaise with staff across PRONI.Respond to access requests to At Risk/Unfit records by the public.Outreach and engagement with PRONI staff, stakeholders and members of the public.Complete PRONI Conservation Studio’s COSSH and risk assessment documentation where appropriate.Assist with Emergency Planning Training.

MA in a practical conservation course, (specialising in photography, paper or book conservation) or equivalent workplace training.

Two years post-qualification experience.

Experience of evaluating conservation damage and risks to photographic or audio/visual collections or be prepared to identify and undertake relevant CPD.

Successful completion of treatments and documentation according to ICON Professional Standards or ICRI Code of Conduct on paper based collections or books.

Experience of managing a conservation project i.e. collection survey.

Understanding preventive conservation and passive measures to lower the rate of deterioration.

  • Experience of working with large archive collections

The successful candidates will be required to start once the vetting paperwork and ANI completed.
