Job description

Join us today to become a Conservator Volunteer and be part of the team keeping history alive by preserving our waterways. In this role, you’ll experience the many faces and locations of our beautiful network and help maintain our structures and assets. Whether it’s working on pre-planned maintenance, cutting back vegetation around aqueducts, or tackling graffiti in urban locations, our Conservators ensure there’s plenty of beauty on the doorstep. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in your community while learning more about the canals in your area.

Why we want you

Our Conservator volunteers help maintain our network, carrying out heritage and nature conservation activities, as well as everyday tasks like painting or litter picking to improve the local environment.

They help address tough issues on the waterways, ensuring accessible and well-maintained canals. Your support will help us manage our increasingly popular space and achieve our goals in keeping canals alive.

Some tasks are part of regular teams, while others are project-based, such as rebuilding stone walls or planting, allowing volunteers to contribute in different ways.

What you will be doing

  1. Day-to-day maintenance
  2. Heritage restoration
  3. Graffiti removal
  4. Environmental enhancements like hedgelaying
  5. Creating new access points with building or improving steps or ramps
  6. When registering as a volunteer, we will ask about any unspent convictions to declare and assess risks accordingly.
