Base pay range

Liverpool City Council works to make a positive impact on the vibrant, energetic and engaged communities of Liverpool and make the city a better place. The Council now seeks a Conservation Team Leader to work within the Liverpool Record Office, a nationally accredited archive service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the provision of an excellent library and archive service for the whole community.
  • Specialising in conservation and archive areas, assisting in the delivery and support of nationally accredited conservation services within the Liverpool Record Office.
  • Managing and deploying staff within the department, including their appointment, training, mentoring, supervision, and welfare, including attendance management.
  • Ensuring staff activities are planned to include meaningful one-to-one conversations, quality annual appraisals and regular workforce planning and development.
  • Managing the Council’s resources and monitoring its financial performance, delivering within budget and seeking savings where possible.
  • Informing the development of archive and library strategies that also support the strategic aims of Liverpool City Council.
  • Conducting interventive conservation treatments to preserve the archives and special collections.
  • Delivering and promoting excellent customer service.

Skills and Experience

  • Relevant formal qualifications (e.g., Archive Conservation/Conservator qualification to graduate degree or above) or equivalent skills and experience.
  • Experience managing conservation services within a conservation, museum, or archive environment.
  • Effective financial management and budgetary control skills.
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation and policies with reference to archive collections.
  • Ability to plan services to identify programmes of conservation work, develop programmes of public access to archive materials, and design participative opportunities that educate people about archive collections and the conservation of heritage and community assets.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to communicate confidently and effectively with customers, suppliers, and staff at all levels.
  • Ability to deal with the physical demands of the role, including handling chemicals, liquids, and sharp instruments and the manual handling of heavy library and archive materials.
  • At least 27 days’ holiday, rising to 32 days after 5 years’ service, plus bank holidays and the option to purchase further days (pro rata where applicable).
