Job summary

The Francis Crick Institute is Europe’s largest biomedical research institute under one roof. This role as Confocal Manager supports world‑leading imaging platforms and involves quality control, troubleshooting, and close collaboration with service engineers and researchers to maintain 15–20 confocal microscopes.

A degree or experience in physics/engineering is preferred, with strong project management and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Degree or experience in physics, engineering, or related field.
• Experience with technical instruments.
• Familiarity with basic statistics.
• Ability to work in a team and independently.
• Strong project management and prioritisation.
• Effective written and verbal communication.
• Creative thinking and problem-solving.
• Excellent organisational and time management.
• Experience with spreadsheets (Google Sheets and Excel).

Responsibilities

• Acquire and analyse standardised images of test samples to capture instrument performance.
• Maintain a record of system performance for each confocal microscope.
• Coordinate with local users to understand instrument performance issues.
• Coordinate with service engineers to arrange repairs and follow up.
• Evaluate new methods for routine microscope maintenance.
• Inspect/clean microscope components including objectives, eyepieces and peripherals.
• Replenish lab consumables including lens tissues and immersion oil.
• Install and update software.
• Implement web based projects for internal viewing and comparison.
