Job summary

University of Glasgow is seeking a Demonstrator (0.01 FTE) to support practical computing sessions in life sciences, oversee labs, and provide clear explanations linking practical work to course outcomes.

The role involves marking, developing teaching materials, ensuring health and safety, and contributing to professional development, with flexible, part-time terms and involvement in international engagement initiatives.

Qualifications

• A1. SCQF Level 10 (Honours degree) in a relevant subject or a cognate discipline, or equivalent.
• Training in bioinformatics or computer programming.
• Advanced knowledge of content covered within the courses taught on.
• Awareness of the intended learning outcomes of the courses taught on.
• Understanding of relevant health and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• 1. To support computing lab practical sessions and class or small-group seminars in the subject specialism through demonstration and oversight, including pro-active interaction with students, answering their questions, and helping to solve problems the students are encountering.
• 2. To be aware of any health and safety implications of the activities of students in lab sessions, and to take action to maintain a safe environment, raising any concerns with the session leader and course leader.
• 3.To contribute to the development of teaching material and workbooks/exercise instructions.
• 4. Where required, to assist in marking student assessments set by the course organiser using defined marking criteria where marking requires little or no interpretation.
• 5. Where appropriate, to assist in marking student assessments set by the course organiser in a second marking role.
• 6. Where required, to contribute to the drafting of appropriate marker comments and feedback to students, in association with first markers and the course leader.
• 7. Where required, to check that IT equipment and infrastructure used and deployed by the students are functional and in good working order and to take steps to rectify any IT-related problems encountered.
• 8. To engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
• 9. To undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
• 10. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan: World Changers Together
