Job Description:

A leading player in the energy trading sector is seeking a Compliance Manager to support the delivery of an effective and consistent ethics and compliance (E&C) programme across its London office and recently launched operations in Germany. The role will focus on providing timely regulatory guidance to the European Gas & Power trading business, conducting market and communications surveillance, and shaping governance around algorithmic trading. The successful candidate will join a collaborative global compliance team, contributing to a robust and forward-thinking compliance function. This London-based position includes periodic travel to Germany.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Compliance Manager, this role supports risk identification and mitigation, monitors regulatory adherence, and builds a culture of integrity through training and engagement.

  • Conduct trade surveillance to ensure adherence to regulatory obligations and trading venue requirements (e.g., MAR, REMIT).
  • Monitor internal communications for indicators of market abuse or the handling of inside information, aligned with regulatory standards.
  • Enhance and maintain surveillance tools and processes to detect and report suspicious activities effectively.
  • Define and calibrate alert scenarios within surveillance systems to identify potential misconduct.

Advisory & Risk Oversight

  • Provide regulatory advice to trading desks and support teams on compliance matters, including business conduct and emerging regulations.
  • Support the assessment of new or revised rules and regulatory frameworks, particularly those impacting commodity trading (e.g., MiFID II, REMIT).
  • Collaborate with business leaders to identify compliance risks in new initiatives or trading strategies.
  • Coordinate risk-based monitoring activities for the Germany office and ensure documentation of relevant policies and procedures.

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships across front office, legal, operations, and compliance teams in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Partner with colleagues across global compliance hubs to support consistent standards, share best practices, and resolve incidents.
  • Play a proactive role in fostering a strong culture of compliance through internal engagement and training initiatives.

Algorithmic & Electronic Trading Governance

  • Lead the development and implementation of a control framework for algorithmic and electronic trading activities.
  • Advise on governance structures to oversee the design, testing, and deployment of automated trading tools.
  • Help identify risks related to inside information management in the context of algorithmic strategies.

Candidate Profile

  • Fluent English and professional-level German, both written and spoken.
  • University degree (or equivalent experience), ideally in law, finance, business, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of energy commodity trading, products, and market dynamics; familiarity with gas and power markets is a plus.
  • Practical experience with algorithmic or electronic trading operations (e.g., monitoring, governance, or control roles).
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant regulations such as MAR, MiFID II, REMIT, EMIR, and related venue rules.
  • Proven ability to conduct compliance surveillance and develop monitoring frameworks.
  • Strong analytical mindset with sound judgment, integrity, and an ability to influence decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; capable of working across diverse teams and adapting messaging to different audiences.
  • Self-motivated with a collaborative approach and the flexibility to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Familiarity with trade surveillance systems (e.g., SCILA or similar).
  • Experience in developing or delivering compliance training programmes.
