Job summary

Nusku, Bristol-based, is developing a connected heating system to replace gas boilers. As Compliance Engineer, you will own product compliance across software and hardware, focusing on cybersecurity and certification.

Responsibilities

• Identify applicable legislation, standards and certification requirements and translate them into product, software and hardware requirements.
• Develop and maintain compliance and certification strategies for current products and New Product Introductions.
• Produce compliance plans, test specifications, traceability matrices and technical documentation for CE/UKCA conformity.
• Review embedded software, firmware, controllers, electronics and connected-product designs for compliance and cybersecurity risks.
• Plan and conduct verification/testing, in-house and with external labs, to demonstrate compliance.
• Coordinate safety, EMC, RF and cybersecurity assessments and gather supporting evidence.
• Investigate test and compliance failures with engineering teams and determine corrective actions.
• Assess compliance impact of product changes across the lifecycle.
• Maintain configuration management and release control for technical compliance documentation.
• Engage with test laboratories, certification bodies, cybersecurity specialists and notified bodies as needed.

Who you are

We are looking for someone who is proactive, adaptable and willing to take ownership; combining both technical attention to detail with a practical engineering mindset towards software development, hardware design and product compliance.

As a Compliance Engineer, this role would suit someone who enjoys bringing compliance requirements into practical applications throughout the journey of product development, working alongside engineers to find proportionate solutions to compliance and cyber-security risks.

You should be comfortable understanding standards, reviewing software and hardware designs, establishing test requirements and challenge designs constructively with team members.

What the job involves

As a Compliance Engineer, you will take ownership of product compliance activities throughout the development lifecycle, with a particular focus on software-controlled products, embedded controllers, connectivity and cybersecurity.

Working closely with our software, electronics, controls, hardware, testing and manufacturing teams, your responsibilities will include:

• Identifying applicable legislation, standards and certification requirements and translating them into clear product, software and hardware requirements.
• Developing and maintaining compliance and certification strategies for current products and future New Product Introduction projects.
• Producing compliance plans, test specifications, requirements traceability matrices, technical documentation and evidence to support CE/UKCA conformity and other product approvals.
• Reviewing embedded software, firmware, controller, electronics and connected-product designs to identify compliance and cybersecurity risks early in development.
• Planning, coordinating and carrying out verification and compliance testing, both in-house and with external test laboratories.
• Coordinating safety, EMC, RF and cybersecurity assessments, ensuring that testing and supporting evidence meet the applicable requirements.
• Investigating test and compliance failures with the relevant engineering teams and agreeing proportionate corrective actions.
• Assessing the compliance impact of software, hardware and product changes throughout the product lifecycle.
• Supporting effective configuration management, release control and the ongoing maintenance of technical compliance documentation.
• Building and maintaining productive relationships with test laboratories, certification bodies, cybersecurity specialists and, where applicable, UK approved bodies or EU notified bodies.

This is an office-based role, working closely with our engineering, manufacturing, procurement and field teams from our Bristol site. The role depends on regular face-to-face collaboration, active project coordination and close involvement with product development and delivery activity.

Occasional home working may be possible where it fits with project needs, but applicants should expect this to be a predominantly site-based position. Some domestic travel may also be required to support suppliers, manufacturing partners, test sites, certification partners and notified bodies.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for someone with a solid foundation in product compliance, who is ready to apply their skills in a fast-growing product development environment.

Must-haves:

• Demonstrable experience in product compliance, product safety, certification, testing, verification or regulatory engineering for software-controlled or connected products.
• A strong practical background in verification and validation, with the ability to translate standards and regulatory requirements into clear specifications, compliance plans, test plans and acceptance criteria.
• Working knowledge of connected-product cybersecurity requirements and standards, such as the UK PSTI regime, the EN 18031 series and the EU Cyber Resilience Act, or demonstrably transferable experience.
• Understanding of embedded software, control systems, communications interfaces and connected-product architectures, including how they interact with electrical and electronic hardware.
• Awareness of RF, EMC and EMF requirements and their implications for product design, testing and certification.
• Experience producing requirements traceability matrices, technical documentation and evidence to support product approval and ongoing compliance throughout the product lifecycle.
• Experience collaborating with software, electronics, controls and hardware engineers to investigate compliance or test failures, assess product changes and implement proportionate corrective actions.
• Experience working with external test laboratories, certification bodies, cybersecurity specialists or other conformity-assessment partners.
• Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills, with a structured, evidence-based approach and the adaptability to work effectively in a fast-moving start-up environment.

Nice-to-haves:

• Experience in embedded software, firmware or controller development for heat pumps, HVAC systems or other connected products.
• Knowledge of secure development practices, including threat modelling, vulnerability management and penetration testing.
• Experience with secure communications, authentication, access control and software-update mechanisms.
• Familiarity with requirements traceability, configuration management, release control and software change-impact assessment.
• Understanding of cloud connectivity, mobile applications, APIs or remote-monitoring platforms.
• Familiarity with connected-product communications, including sub-GHz wireless systems operating in the 868 MHz band, Wi-Fi, wired Ethernet, and industrial protocols such as Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP.
• Awareness of relevant heat-pump product safety, control and EMC standards, including EN 60335-1, EN 60335-2-40, EN 60730, EN 55014 and EN 61000.
• Awareness of heat pump and product hardware standards, including EN 60335-1, EN 60335-2-40, EN 60730, EN 55014 & EN 61000.
