University residences provide accommodation to approximately 5,500 students across the university. We are committed to providing a professional, customer focused service to a wide range of people.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, positive and reliable individual to be responsible undertaking tasks to ensure compliance with the UUK Code of Practice across Cardiff University residences and supporting the effective provision of a Handyperson service on a student residences site.

One full time, open-ended post, 35 hours per week, typically Monday to Friday.

Starting Salary: £23,028 per annum with one increment point up to £23,414 per annum (Grade 2).

Package includes 32 days holiday per year plus 8 bank holidays, pro rata for part time staff, as well as access to a range of staff discounts.

This role is based on Campus.

Job Description

MAIN DUTIES

  • To undertake tasks to ensure compliance with the UUK Code of Practice across Cardiff University residences, including:
    • To conduct a monthly check of all emergency evacuation routes within residences, identifying any potential hazards that may inhibit or prevent safe means of escape (including corridors, stairwells and final exit doors)
    • To test emergency lighting monthly
    • To ensure the monthly fire door inspections are carried out, including door closers, push bars, vision panels and ironmongery
    • To visually inspect fire extinguishers, monthly, to ensure they have not been discharged and are in good repair.
    • To undertake checks of fire safety and detection equipment and assist with the routine testing of fire alarms
    • To maintain accurate records of checks/inspections/tests and/or work completed or raised.
  • To support completion of other compliance related tasks, such as emergency signage review.
  • To carry out legionella flushing and maintain accurate records as required.
  • To carry out Portable Appliance testing procedures and maintain accurate records as required.
  • To conduct and record light levels so remedial action can be taken to address, as necessary.
  • To conduct minor repairs and report any major repairs to site management and Estates as applicable. To operate under safe working practices and maintain records of on-going maintenance problems, particularly in relation to planned maintenance issues.
  • To perform routine manual handling tasks as required.
  • To be aware of security issues on site, maintaining contact with the residences team through radio transmission.
  • To drive University vehicles to facilitate distribution and installation of fire safety signage and equipment, including fire extinguishers.
  • To attend and actively participate in all basic training, including Estates led training, as identified in the Training Matrix.
  • To identify your personal training needs in conjunction with your manager, ensuring that learning is transferred to the workplace.
  • To actively participate in Quality and Customer Care initiatives.
  • To abide by university policies on Health and Safety.
  • To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and to assist with tasks related to ensuring full compliance with code as appropriate.
  • To provide a service to customers during arrivals/departures, conferences and other busy periods which may be within other residences and involve working additional hours.
  • You may be asked to perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

Campus Services provides a range of professional support services to students, staff and visitors at Cardiff University.

Residences manages accommodation places for approximately 5,500 students, both catered and self-catered.

In terms of catering, there are cafés and restaurants conveniently located across university campuses, in addition to a delivered hospitality service.

Cardiff University Sport exists to provide students and staff with a balanced, high quality and integrated sport service which meets the needs of a broad range of users.

The Nursery offers facilities for children aged between 10 weeks and 5 years and is divided into sections appropriate to the ages and development of the children.

Both residential and catering facilities are utilised for conferences and functions during the University’s vacation periods. A purpose built and designed conference centre and conference facility is also available throughout the year.

The Campus Services operation is supported by its own central administration functions covering the allocation of residences, human resource and quality, purchasing, facilities, finance, and general administration.
